Durga

Dating: 11th century CE

Provenance: Chanh Lo, Quang Ngai Province

Inventory No.: BTC 163

This relief depicts the goddess Durga in a dancing posture. The deity is represented with four arms: her lower right hand holds a mace and her lower left holds a spouted water vessel; her upper right hand holds a lotus bud, while her upper left performs a sacred hand gesture (mudra) with the thumb and middle finger joined—a gesture that, according to Indian iconography, symbolizes the transmission of wisdom and spiritual insight.

Flanking the goddess at her feet are two attendants kneeling in reverence, holding out sacred offerings to the deity.
